Put simply, blog is shorthand for web log or in other words, a kind of online diary. Blogging is an incredibly versatile way of participating in and using the internet as an active communication medium.

Blogs are set up for all sorts of reasons - this one for the NSW Grassland Society is used as to make news announcements and as a place where we can put snippets of information that might be of interest. Anyone can join the "blogosphere" by either writing, reading, subscribing to and/or commenting on a blog. If you ignore this new phenomenon of blogging, you are missing out on a huge chunk of the internet so let's have a look at the basics:

Searching the Blogosphere
There are literally millions of blogs out there so how do you find something of interest ? Here are some suggestions:

Google Blog Search - basic search using the Google system

Technorati - up to date monitoring of popular topics with advanced searching

del.icio.us - strange name but building a community using tags & bookmarks

Subscribing to a Blog
Once you have found a blog that you would like to keep reading, you can usually subscribe to it so you are automatically notified of any updates. This can be done in a number of ways - posts sent to your email program, update notifications or by using a specialised newsreader program or website. Here are a few that we use ourselves (there are many more out there): Feedburner, Technorati, and Bloglines (all free to register).

Becoming a Blogger
Anyone can start their own blog - there are a range of options but for those on a tight budget, we recommend Blogger or Wordpress (both are completely free of charge). Sign up and in a few minutes you can start writing. Alternatively, you may like to comment on blogs written by other people - look for a comments section at the bottom of each article (or post). Make your thoughts known to the world. By the way, the Grassland Society of NSW welcomes comments so feel free to add your feedback.

Agricultural Blogs
Just to get you started, here are a few different types of blogs that that might be of interest to those in the agricultural industries.

Rational Agriculture - UK based blog about science in agriculture

Agriculture Resources - collection of links in blog format

Environmental News Network - Food & Agriculture headlines

Life on the Pea Harvest - a quirky diary of a Birds Eye agricultural manager describing this years pea crop (in England)

Diary of a Carbon Farmer - written by a consultant/farmer at Gulgong, NSW

LandHear - blog about sustainable land management in Australia

Pasture Perfect Produce - blog about an organic farm producing pork in NSW

These are not in any particular order - just a sampling of the different types of blogs that are out there (some obviously are more relevant or reliable than others). Of course, you will find blogs on any subject you would like to think of so get searching and link up with those of similar interests. Or you may be inspired to set up your own.

Hope this has been of some interest and explains why the Grassland Society of NSW maintains a blog in conjunction with its website. Stay tuned for a post about this year's conference - not quite as good as being there yourself but definitely the next best thing.

Cheers for now from the Web Team.

BeefCents 06 - BIAA National Conference

For those who are not planning on attending the Grassland Society of NSW Annual Conference in Wagga Wagga in the south of the state, here is one that might be of interest for those in the north.

The Beef Improvement Association of Australia will be holding their annual conference at Tamworth on Wednesday 26th July. Poster papers are invited from NSW Grassland Society members - maximum of 1.5 pages (A4).

Papers are required to be submitted by the deadline of 7th April 2006 as we have a policy of printing the conference proceedings before the conference, allowing delegates the opportunity to read the papers before they are presented. Submission as soon as possible would assist the editorial committee, and would be greatly appreciated.

Guidelines for authors are available from the Conference Committee:
Belinda Hackney
Conference Convener
NSW Department of Primary Industries
PMB, Pine Gully Rd
Wagga Wagga NSW 2650 Fax: (02) 6938 1858

These will also be posted on the website as soon as possible.
Thank you from the Website Team

Website additions

Just a quick note to Society members advising of website updates. Grassland Society newsletters are now published on the website up till Volume 21, Number 1. The search box in the left margin allows you to search the whole website for any articles or topics of interest or by author name. Very handy if you are trying to track down that elusive article that you would like to read again.

We have also incorporated a weather search box - also on the left margin below the menu bar and search box. This allows you to enter any town name or postcode and instantly see the relevant weather and climate information for the nearest weather station. While most people in the agricultural industry will have their favourite weather sites, we hope you will find this addition a useful feature to the Grassland Society website.

Preliminary information for the 2006 Conference is also published and will be updated as details are finalised by the Conference Committee. Cheers for now, and remember we welcome feedback and suggestions from members on how to improve the website.

Cicerone Project Symposium

Grassland Society members may be interested to attend the 2006 Cicerone Project Symposium being held at Chiswick (Armidale, NSW) on the 11th May.

The Cicerone Project is a producer-led research project, aiming to increase the profitability and sustainability of grazing-based agriculture on the Northern Tablelands. I trust all the Grassland members (and others too!) are experiencing good pasture, livestock and crop prospects.

The Society is continuing to make progress in a number of areas. We are currently encouraging our sponsors from last year to once again support our efforts to improve the transfer of sound technology among all stakeholders in our agricultural industries. Letters to current and new sponsors have been sent and we are awaiting replies. If any of our current sponsors have yet to respond to our letter, we would very much appreciate your reply. Sponsorship benefits have been expanded on previous years and with a growing membership, it represents a sound investment as well as supplying the vital support that the Society needs.

Next year’s conference will be held at Wagga Wagga. Already, a hard working committee is putting together a program that is shaping up as both challenging and very informative. As we have not met at Wagga for some years, this will provide an excellent opportunity to highlight developments in agricultural research and farm practice from the Southern area of the state. A summary of the draft program will appear in the next newsletter.

I am keen to hear from members whether there would be sufficient interest in participating in a study tour - possibly to New Zealand next year. The Society would be able to coordinate such an activity, provided there are adequate numbers. More information on the 2006 NSW Grassland Society Conference will be posted soon.

Regular visitors to the main website may have noticed a new feature on the News/Events page which is an automatically updating news feed of articles from this blog. This is done so that we can more efficiently communicate with our members on news and events of interest. Anyone who may wish to publish an event, field day, short course, etc is encouraged to use the blog in this way. Just contact the web team if you would like to use this service - we can do the post for you or it can be "self serve". Grassland Society committee members are able to login and create articles - it only takes a few minutes and is very easy so contact us if you would like login details (email admin@grasslandnsw.com.au).

Very pleasing to see such good rain over the state at last - hopefully you are getting the right amount wherever you are. Always very busy at this time of year but we hope to publish more content on the main website as soon as possible so we can make it a useful resource for anyone interested in grassland management. Our apologies for this glitch in the website - the problem has now been fixed and you can download the application form from the Membership page of the main website (please refresh your browser to make sure are looking at the corrected version of the page). You can also download the form directly from this link (pdf membership form).

Membership offers great value at just $50 for 2004/05 which entitles you to copies of the Newsletters (issued quarterly) and a copy of the Annual Conference Proceedings as well as subsidised rates for attendance at events such as the Annual Conference and field days or seminars. Membership also gives you access to the Members Only pages of the main website - a wealth of information useful for anyone interested in grassland management - visitors may browse the content within these sections by using the search box in the left hand margin but will not be able to access the information unless they have logged in. This list of links is divided into a number of categories and is a convenient place to find websites of various seed and fertiliser companies, government and industry/research organisations as well as weather and other portal sites.

If you have any suggestions for additions to this list, please contact the website administrator.

Those of you who look at the 10 day rainfall map provided by the IGER will have noticed that it has been unavailable over the last couple of weeks. These forecasts have just been moved to a new location so if you have bookmarked this site, you may need to correct it to the new address. This also applies to the 6 day forecasts provided by the same organisation.

We have also put in a new link to the Australian Farming Virtual Library - a collection of links relating to anything agricultural - well worth a look as there might be a useful link in there that you have not yet discovered.

Please contact us if you have any suggestions for the website generally or if you are having trouble logging in to the member resource area.
Cheers for now from the website administration team

Supplementary Feeding information

The Supplementary Feeding Field Days held at Guyra and Deepwater recently offred Grassland Society members a great deal of useful information on the principles of supplementary feeding. Hopefully many of you will have received useful rain in recent weeks, however, the cold temperatures limiting pasture growth means that supplementary feeding will still be a fact of life on many farms over the next few months. The committee of the Northern Tablelands Branch of the Grassland Society of NSW has kindly allowed much of the resouce material presented at these field days to be published on the main grasslands website.

The publishing job is still underway and should be finished in the next week. For those of you keen for a sneak preview, click here to open a PDF file containing Lewis Kahn's excellent presentation on the principles of supplementary feeding or Michael Lollback's comprehensive presentation on supplementary feeding and sheep production. Both of these presentations contain very useful information here for all graziers when making difficult feeding decisions. Please note that the information appearing in these notes is general in nature and more specific information should be sought from the author or your advisor. These files are stored in the Members Only area of the NSW Grassland Society website so you may be asked to login before accessing the files.
